At Maleny Art we offer high quality limited-edition digital artwork printed on canvas. With a longest dimension of about 100 centimetres, each canvas is impressive in any setting.
The inspiration for our art comes chiefly from the natural sciences, particularly the geological and environmental sciences. With this focus, most attention is given to the beautiful Sunshine Coast region of southeast Queensland, especially the Maleny plateau in the hinterland. Nevertheless, some pieces of art relate to other interesting areas in Australia and elsewhere. To enable our artwork on this website to be viewed in a somewhat systematic manner, paintings are organised under galleries of: Geology; Landscapes; Landforms; and Natural Environments.
Even though our paintings overall are organised according to galleries for the convenience of viewers, each piece of work is intended to stand alone on its merits based on the artistic worth of the subject. The number of prints made from each piece of digital art is restricted to a total of 25. Each print is signed and numbered individually by the artist. Further, for each piece of art we also provide a printed brief but informative background to the work as well as a certificate of authenticity.
Quality limited-edition canvas prints at an affordable price
Our art has been created digitally, drawn on a Wacom Intuos tablet connected to a computer with a large monitor. The Wacom pen mimics the effects of tools such as paint and pencil, enabling artists to find their creative zone with the natural, intuitive feeling of a Wacom pen in hand. When each piece of digital artwork has been completed, high quality prints are produced commercially on canvas.
Features of the canvases printed from the digital art are:
-
Canvases created by Maleny Art are all limited-editions, with a maximum of 25 prints produced
-
The canvases are large, typically with longest dimension about 100 cm
-
The printing is undertaken commercially by experts with over 20 years experience in colour management, using specialist technology and trained operators
-
The printing company uses the latest 'green' printing technology; the HP latex inks are expected to last many generations (more than 80 years)
-
High quality, heavy weight canvas manufactured in the USA is used in the printing (22 mil polycotton blend white satin canvas; 450 grams per square metre; excellent color brilliance and image definition); the canvas prints are stretched over a stable timber frame
-
The ideal frame for canvas prints is kiln dried wood (light weight; frame is stable and does not warp with heat since the moisture has been removed); plantation-grown kiln-dried radiata pine is used for our frames
-
The canvas prints come gallery wrapped i.e. the canvas is stretched around the edges of the frame to create a seamless museum quality finish. (Choices are available i.e. complete image wrap or white or coloured edges.)

Creating the digital art
Our chief digital artist is Dr Al Grenfell, a qualified and experienced geologist with a particular interest in the natural sciences, especially the earth and environmental sciences. Our art is created using a Wacom Intuos tablet and other computer equipment; since this technology generally does not facilitate painting in the field, sketches and photographs are important resources when working on digital paintings. Sketches are particularly important to us in recording colour and tone, light and shade, and the structure and form that are critical components of the planned composition.
The Wacom Intuos tablet is shown below.
Impressively large canvas prints
Maleny Art's canvas artworks are limited to 25 prints for each piece of art. Prints are signed and numbered individually by the artist. Each piece of art is sufficiently large to be impressive in any setting. The illustration below shows the approximate size of two examples of the canvas prints as they would appear in a room.
Caring for canvas prints
Some care as well as some regard to placement of your prints will ensure the artwork continues to deliver the eye-catching colour that was part of the features that attracted you in the first place.
Some key factors to consider:
-
Do not place your print in direct sunlight. Indirect light is best. Artwork should never be displayed on walls that are illuminated with sunlight at any time of the day. The best approach is to display artwork in rooms with low levels of indirect or artificial lighting.
-
Do not display your painting in an excessively damp location.
